Alpacas are members of the camelid family and originate from the Andes mountains in South America. Alpacas are gentle, curious animals that produce one of the world's finest and most luxurious natural fibers. Their fiber is comparable in softness to cashmere and stronger and warmer than wool. Alpaca contains hollow fibers which creates a form of insulation for the wearer. Alpaca is much less 'prickly' than wool and is hypo-allergenic, due to the lack of lanolin in the fleece. This also makes it naturally flame retardant. Alpaca is naturally rain resistant which makes it resistant to odors or mildew. It has superior breathability and provides better wicking of body moisture. In Incan times fine alpaca garments were limited to royalty. Now you can experience what Incan royalty prized! We have been fortunate to be able to raise these beautiful, curious animals on our farm in upstate New York. We offer a variety of products from various sources, some imported from Peru, some locally made, and some made in the U.S.A. We are continuing to expand our products and encourage any suggestions or requests. Check out our upcoming events tab or if you are in the area, come visit our store and farm. The Little Alpaca shop is open by chance or appointment.
